JPP GRANT

The Hinsdale Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) has received a grant from the state of New Hampshire to promote Hinsdale’s natural outdoor areas and recreational opportunities. The purpose of the New Hampshire Joint Promotional Program (JPP) is to invest in tourism promotional initiatives developed for groups and organizations to encourage the development of quality out- of-state and in-state promotion projects. HEDC is using the funding to create a video series highlighting Hinsdale’s natural assets and outdoor recreation. These videos will showcase our trails, riverfront, and community spaces to draw tourism and support our local businesses and organizations. Filming is currently underway and the videos will be released in 2026.

DID YOU KNOW?

In a machine shop here, in Hinsdale on Canal Street George A. Long built a self-propelled steam vehicle in 1875, the Long steam tricycle, for which he received one of the nation's earliest automobile patents. The Long steam tricycle appears to be one of the earliest preserved examples of a steam tricycle, built by George Alvin Long around 1880 and patented in 1883. One example was built, which after some years of use was dismantled and the parts dispersed. In 1946, one John H. Bacon, with assistance from the 96-year-old Long, reassembled the machine, which is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution. The example at the Smithsonian has been noted as the "oldest completely operable self-propelled road vehicle in the museum.
